This weekend I attended the Core Change Summit at the Millenium hotel.  The focus of the summit was to gather people from all walks of life in one place to discuss challenges and solutions to Cincinnati’s inner city.  It was impressive to see so many people (700 registered) in one room who all seemed to have a welcoming spirit about them. From the beginning of the Summit we learned about the possibilities of what happens when “improbable people” collaborate.

We were then shown a success story of an improbable relationship which was the story of the white CEO of Cincinnati bell and the Black principle of Taft high school.  Their teamwork has lead to a complete turnaround in the graduation rate of students in Taft. After hearing their inspiring story most of the folks around me were saying “these type of improbable partnerships need to happen more.”

In my opinion one of our city’s challenges is that we often don’t have opportunities to get to know each other but it felt like everyone at the Core Change summit came with an open mind and heart ready to absorb each others experiences. Although I was unable to attend the entire summit I felt like one of the best outcomes was that new relationships were built. Other attendants and I were able to share our stories and ideas about Cincinnati with one another and we may not have ever had a chance to do so otherwise.  I believe that as our city’s residents continue to talk to each other we will see each other more as “neighbors” and together we will make Cincinnati more of a place of opportunity for all.

Public Allies Cincinnati , STRIVE & Elementz teamed up for a Community Forum here at the center for a open discussion about the positives and negatives of living in Cincinnati. Needless to say, we had a great turnout and many voices were heard. The premise of the conversation explored whether or not Cincinnati deserved to be voted in the top 100 for cities for youth to live in. Citizens of all walks of life and ages came to offer their opinions and ideas. Once again we would like to thank Public Allies & STRIVE for partnering with us to ensure that the opinions of our youth are heard!

March 3, 2012 Rohs St Cafe will host the triple album release show of hometown artists MC Till, Sean Little, and the duo, Wonder Brown & Elementz’ own MC Forty. The group of MC’s is known beyond their music for their impact on the community. The triple album release show is a celebration of hip hop and community. The doors open at 8:00 pm and the cover is $3.

This past Saturday, Bro. Abdullah and I visited Tek-Labs studio across the river in Covington. The walls in this state-of-the-art facility were covered in discography from producer Hi-Tek’s storied career. In the studio, I saw a bunch of equipment that I had zero knowledge of prior to then. I was quite amazed.

Our main reason for being there was a press conference/listening session with world famous singer, Estelle. While waiting for the conference to start, I met radio personality Jai All Day, along with three other lucky people who had the pleasure. I also met Thadoubleo.com’s Justo. We held a brief conversation about The Native’s new mixtape, “Native America”.

When the listening session began, Estelle played us a few tracks from her upcoming album “All Of Me”. This included “Break My Heart” featuring one of my favorite rappers, Rick Ross. Afterwards, we got to ask questions. Except for in the 2011 BET hip-hop awards, I also got to see a emcee side of Estelle which I had never saw. She even revealed to us that she was primarily a rapper until someone told her how great of a singer she was. After all questions were answered, pictures were taken, and then Estelle had to prepare for her show at the Mixx Ultra Lounge (1203 Main St.) later that night. Overall, this was a wonderful experience.

On February 15th from 5 to 7 PM Public Allies Cincinnati, Strive Partnership and Elementz Hip Hop Youth Center will present a open discussion to record public knowledge about the opportunities Cincinnati offers young people!

The Summit is a three-day gathering of hundreds of residents and leaders representing all segments of the community. Summit participants will discover shared hopes and aspirations, be transformed through unlikely interactions and will design solutions focused on the urban core.
